On the similarities of Fate/Zero and A Song of Ice and Fire
Fate/Zero is an anime series based on the light novel written by Gen Urobuchi (Perhaps best known for writing for the series Puella Magi Madoka Magica) which focuses on the 4th Holy Grail War, a battle between seven mages over the chance to have one wish granted by the mythical Holy Grail. Each mage summons a “servant,” a legendary figure from history, to fight for them.
This series shares quite a few similarities with George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire series of novels. Both stories lack a traditional protagonist, but rather focuses on several individuals with different ideals and their pursuit of power. A large cast of characters who are all morally compromised in one way or another… Sound familiar? Not to get too far into spoiler territory, but those who know of Gen Urobuchi may also know of his nickname: The Urobutcher. It stands to reason that he and the GRRM Reaper would share similar thoughts on character death. Daddy issues, unrequited love, lady warriors, power-hungry men, loyalty, and deceit are just a handful of other shared subjects of these works. If you are a fan of the A Song of Ice and Fire series or its television adaptation, Game of Thrones, Fate/Zero is certainly something with similar themes, stories, and characters which you might be interested in checking out.
